ROUND 5 : 01.06.08

U6 Blues V Mascot
A damp track and light breeze welcomed the mighty Crocs home to Burrows on the first day of winter.

The very well attired Referee gave the boys a long address before kick-off. It would have been helpful if he added “Tackle the bloke that gets the ball from the kick-off”. He didn’t and we didn’t and so we were down a try from the word go.

Thereafter the game picked up and the Crocs led mid way through the first half.

The Crocs are really running hard and playing the ball quickly which is allowing us to catch the opposition asleep or offside. Patrick again made some massive charges. Matty had some great runs and showed some fancy footwork. At one stage we thought Julian got over for a meat pie, but the ref ruled him just short. As always, James was the go-to man for attack and he picked up 5 tries on the back of good running by our boys.

In defense, James and Max shared the tackle count honours. Almost everyone made at least one tackle which is great. There were a couple of massive hits* (see below) which allowed us to pick up some spilt ball. Cameron was great cleaning up the pill and running it back. A special commendation goes out to Luke for an especially fine tackle. Interestingly it was in the backplay, and on his teammate Archie, who didn’t have the ball.... but it was a good effort nevertheless.

At the end of the day, the Crocs were ahead in most of the vital stats. We won the coin toss. We finished well ahead in the penalty count. We made fewer turnovers. We held the ball for more tackles. Our goal kickers were more accurate. The Crocs had more reserves.

Unfortunately we finished behind on one important stat: Mascot scored 8 tries, the Crocs 5. Mascot were blessed with some really fast runners, and made a couple of marvelous offloads while being tacked and so Mascot won 40 – 26. The Crocs were beaten but not disgraced.

Matty Dawson was awarded man of the match on the back of a great attacking performance. With World Youth Day just around the corner it is appropriate that there we no sinners this week; well done team.

The bye next weekend will allow the team to overcome their mid season niggling injuries, and then the opposition better watch out!
